“On Getting What You Ask For…”

March 2000 (Seventeen years into the journey…)

“Trust in the Lord and do good; Dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.  Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will grant you the desires of your heart.”

Psalm 37:3-4

There comes a point in the life of obedience when things begin, by the Grace of God, to pan out according to His plans.  Sometimes it comes as quite a surprise.  Having delighted ourselves in Him, we run the risk of waking up one day to find we lack for absolutely nothing.  This is how it is for me to walk out with my coffee in the morning onto the porch of the home God has erected as a provision and a shelter for myself and my family here on His mountain.  This is how it is to find I am rising up, living the desires of my heart.  I want to leave you with a quote which leaps to mind as, in my joy, I exhort you to persevere:

“The spiritual life is not a theory.  We have to live it…If we are painstaking about…our development, we will be amazed before we are halfway through.  We are going to know a new freedom and a new happiness.  We will not regret the past nor seek to shut the door on it.  We will comprehend the word serenity and we will know peace.  No matter how far down the scale we have gone, we will see how our experience can benefit others.  The feeling of uselessness and self-pity will disappear.  We will lose interest in selfish things and gain an interest in our fellows.  Self-seeking will slip away.  Our whole attitude and outlook on life will change.  Fear of people and material insecurity will leave us.  We will intuitively know how to handle situations which used to baffle us.  We will suddenly realize that God is doing for us what we could not do ourselves.  Are these extravagant promises?  We think not.  they are being fulfilled among us–sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly.  They will always materialize if we wait for them.”  (AA Blue Book)
